: I'm trying to find out when my grandfather lived in San Francisco in the 1920s. His name was Walter Adolf/Adolph James and after his mother's death was put in a Catholic orphanage by his father for several years, along with his brother Arthur Gilbert James. Any info? Even some details of Catholic orphanages in SF at the time would be much appreciated. Thanks
Try contacting the Sister's of Mercy in Burlingame. I know they settled in San Francisco from Ireland in about 1850 and ran facilities for schools, hospitals and worked with children. They will most likely know where to refer you.
