:William Deavila was my great uncle. He was principal of the school for years. He was the son of Maguerite Deavila and had a half sister Ethel, who was my grandmother. William killed himself after living for years with multiple sclerosis. He was a huge advocate for public education in California. That's all the info I have. his children still live in the bay area and he died when I was very young so I am going to guess not later than 1982.
William B De Avila school on Haight street (named around 1980) started out as Dudley Stone named around 1900. Who was De Avila? Who was Stone? SFUSD has no clue.
