What an interesting story! Just an fyi, you couldn't have seen the Letterman Hospital from 19th Avenue. But, she was pointing in the right direction. The Home would have been in upper Pacific Heights or Cow Hollow, but probably Pacific Heights. The old Letterman Hospital was near the eastern entrance of the Presidio.*

I looked in the City directories and couldn't find listings for orphanages. But, I'm sure they is a list somewhere.

(See on a map: Letterman Drive, San Francisco, CA. The hospital from that time was torn down in recent years and has been replaced with newer buildings now occupied by Lucas Digital, as in George Lucas, Star Wars fame.)
