On 5 May 1975, there was a head-on collision that claimed two lives on the Doyle drive approach to the Golden Gate Bridge: drivers Jose A. Mancilla, 23, of Colma, and Herbert Thomas, 53, of San Rafael. Thomas' wife, Patricia, 43, and Mancilla's passenger, Ramon Gonzalez, 29, were taken to hospitals.
According to the article, "The treacherous drive has claimed many lives, including ten persons killed in a single head-on collision in July, 1970."
