Does anyone know how the original SF street numbering worked or if there was even a logical system in the 1850s? For instance, was there a main street where numbers increased outward going east/west and the same for north/south and how did they adapt this as more and more land was pushed out into the bay?
From what I've researched, it doesn't appear that each block contained a definite range of numbers, but was rather variable (for instance, back then you couldn't say 'the 200 block of Sansome').
I would also like to try and find out when the major renumbering instances between then and the 1906 quake.
Any experts out there?
