A possible answer to the question about using the name "Tip Top" is the fact that these businesses were at the top (crest)of a hill!
: I'm researching some of the businesses along Mission in the late 1930s, and have come across a Tip Top Service Station run by B.W. Roberts at 3700 Mission, plus a Tip Top Club (Beer, clams, and sandwiches -- mmmmm!) at 3776 Mission. That bar might actually still exist.
: There's also the Tip Top Variety Shop ("featuring Golden State Ice Cream) at 3840 Mission.
: Is there any way I can find out whether they're related? (Obviously, "tip-top" was the way to say "super-best" or "cream of the crop" back then, but would there have been so many businesses with the same name?)
: Where would I start researching grocery stores etc. in general? (These and others are from a 1938 advertising booklet.)
