HUBERT SMITH

Mass of Christian Burial for Hubert G. Smith, retired Petaluma postman, will be offered at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Vincent De Paul Church, Petaluma.

Smith, 73, died Saturday at a local hospital after a short illness. He was born and reared on the family ranch south of Petaluma. His family had been in the Petaluma area since the early 1800s.

Smith attended St. Vincent’s schools and worked 39 years as a mail carrier at the Petaluma Post Office. He had retired 14 years ago.

Smith, who had been known as “Peanuts,” was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a member of St. Vincent De Paul Church, a 50-year member of St. Vincent’s Council No. 9, Young Men’s Institute, National Association of Letter Carriers and SIRS.

His son, James M. Smith, is a partner and secretary-treasurer, of the Parent Funeral Chapel, Petaluma.

He is survived by hi wife, Evelyn; three sons, Walter R. Smith, Hubert A. (Hoot) Smith and James M. Smith of Petaluma; a brother, Julian (Ike) Smith of Castro Valley, and two grandsons.

Recitation of the rosary will be at 8 p.m. tomorrow at the Parent Funeral Chapel. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.
