Death of an old Soldier
Died in San Anselmo, Thursday, the 22nd of February, John F. Smith in the seventy-first year of his age.
The deceased was born in Providence, New York, on May 17, 1833 and was a farmer by avocation. He was with the Army of the Republic during the Civil war. Later he became blind, and in October last came here from Brockton, New York, in hope of recuperating his failing health. He was the guest of his sister Mrs. Blighton, but in spite of the best care and nursing could accomplish, he gradually grew worse, until released by the grim sergeant, Death.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. N. E. Clemenson in Eden’s undertaking parlors, San Rafael, and the interment was in Mt. Tamalpais cemetery.
