DOROTHEA H. SCOVILLE

Private services were held for Dr. Dorothea H. Scoville, a longtime Marin county resident and 1919 graduate of the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

Dr. Scoville died Oct. 1 following a long illness. She was 86.

A resident of Marin County for 35 years, Dr. Scoville practiced medicine until her retirement in 1974.

At various times in her long career, she served as staff physician at Vassar College; a commissioned officer with t he U.S. Public Health Service; director of maternal and child health for the state public Health Department; a physician for the World Health Organization and a staff member of the Kaiser/Permanente Medical Group in Richmond.

She was a member of the American Association of Public Health, Planned Parenthood, the American Civil Liberties Union and the Womens International League for Peace and Freedom.

She is survived by her two daughters, Elizabeth Scoville of Mill Valley and Mary Haven Thompson of Milpitas, and four grandchildren.

The family prefers memorial contributions to the Planned Parenthood Association or the Womens International League for Peace and Freedom.

A Death Notice on the same page adds that she was the wife of the late Stephan Hegarty. She spent several months in the 1960s in Mississippi as a volunteer with the Mississippi Project. She retired in 1974.
