JOHN M. LARRECQ

At his request, no services will be held for John M. Larrecq of Mill Valley, an award-wining illustrator.

He died Saturday at a local hospital after a long illness. He was 54.

He was a freelance illustrator and designer who worked at his own studio in Mill Valley.

His illustrations and designs have appeared in national publications and at exhibits in San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York.

Larrecq won many awards for his works. Children’s books he illustrated were chosen as notable books by the American Library Association and were also included on the Horn Book honor list. One book was listed by the American Institute of Graphic Art in 1972.

He also designed the U.S. 20- and 21-cent overseas airmail stamps.

One award-winning package design was for chocolate for the Ghirardelli Chocolate Co. of San Francisco.

Larrecq also was one of 50 artist commissioned to do an original work of art for the state of Nevada to commemorate the country’s 200th anniversary in 1976.

He also traveled to Central American and Asia at the request of the U.S. Air Force to do paintings, which now are on display throughout the country.

One of his paintings was chosen by the Air Force in 1978 for a special exhibit to commemorate the 75th year of flight.

He has been a guest lecturer at the College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland and has taught classes in book illustration and design at the Academy of Art Institute in San Francisco.

He received his bachelor’s degree at the California College of Arts and Crafts.

Larrecq was a member of the Society of Illustrators in San Francisco and the Marin R. C. Club.

He was a veteran of World War II.

He is survived by his wife, Diann Larrecq of Mill Valley; a daughter, Andrea Larrecq of Mill Valley; a son, Matthew Larrecq of Mill Valley; his mother, Georgia Larrecq of Mill Valley; his grandmother, Pearl Snowden of Long Beach; and a sister, Patricia Pridgen of Wilmington, N.C.

Arrangements are being handled by Russell & Gooch Funeral Chapel in Mill Valley. The family prefers memorial gifts to favorite charities.
