EDMUND H. STILLMAN

A private service will be held Thursday for Edmund H. Stillman of Greenbrae, a retired Army officer and longtime Marin resident.

Stillman, 89, died Sunday in Greenbrae after an illness.

He was born in San Francisco and grew up in Berkeley. He graduated from the University of California with the class of 1916.

He entered the Army in 1917, serving in France during World War I. Between World War I and II, he served at various assignments with the old Coast Artillery Corps, including service in the Philippines and Hawaii. He also was assigned to various ROTC posts, including the University of California at Berkeley and Michigan State University.

During World War II he served on a general court martial in Chicago. In 1946 he retired as a lieutenant colonel.

After retirement, Stillman and his wife, Elise, moved to Ross, where they lived about 22 years before moving to the Tamalpais in Greenbrae.

While living in Marin, Stillman was active in Masonic lodges. He was a member of Marin Lodge No. 191 and the Scottish Rite and Islamic Temple in San Francisco.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Elise S. Anderson of Texas and Elinor Dutton of Palo Alto; one son, Howard Stillman of Pacifica; one sister, Mary McLaren of Greenbrae; and seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
