EVIE R. WATERS

A funeral service for Evie R. Waters of Sonoma, a resident of Sonoma County for the past two years, was held today at Keaton’s Mortuary in San Rafael.

Mrs. Waters died Saturday in a Sonoma area hospital. She was 78.

Mrs. Waters was a native of Texas. She moved to California in 1940 with her husband, Gerald D. Waters. The couple moved to the Lake Tahoe area in 1944.

She was one of the founders of t he St. Nicholas’ Chapel in North Lake Tahoe and founder of the Sunday school there in 1945. She also was active in other church activities, including starting an Easter sunrise service.

She also was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church in Sonoma.

The couple lived in the Lake Tahoe area for almost 30 years. They returned to Texas for several years and then moved back to California in 1978.

Besides her husband, she is survived by three daughters, Jean Eason of San Rafael, Glendell Marshall and Aileen Brownstone, both of San Mateo County; two sisters, Mrs. Leroy Kennedy and Mrs. Emory Johnson, both of Texas; a brother, T. Deal Reese, of Texas; a step-daughter, Geraldine Degelia of Texas; a niece, LaMerle McGruder of San Rafael; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Burial was at Mount Tamalpais Cemetery in San Rafael.

A Death Notice in the same paper adds that she was also the mother of the late W. A. “Mac” Mahaffey, and grandmother of Michael, Mark and Mevie Mahaffey and Gerald and Susan Marshall.
