CHARLES PURNELL

Charles Purnell of Sausalito, a Marin resident for almost 60 years, died Sunday at a local hospital following a lengthy illness. He was 76.

Purnell was a native of Calgary, Canada and moved to this country in 1923.

He was in the Army in the early 1920s when he met his wife, Anna. The couple married in 1928.

Purnell was a claims adjuster for the Northwestern Pacific Railroad and Pacific Fruit Express for a total of 40 years. He retired in 1969.

He also was active in many community groups, including the Marin Boy Scouts, the Marin Music Chest Chorale, the Winifred Baker Chorale and other groups. He sang for 50 years with the choir at the Sausalito Presbyterian Church.

Since his retirement, Purnell and his wife have traveled extensively.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Roland N. Purnell of Ventura; a daughter, Corinne P. Bird of Mill Valley; a brother, Harold Purnell of Victoria, British Columbia; two sisters, Annie Steward of Calgary and Sylvina Courtwright of Victoria, and five grandchildren.

A date for a memorial services has not yet been set. Arrangements are under the direction of the Russell & Gooch mortuary, Mill Valley.

The family prefers memorial donations to the First Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, P. O. Box 326, Sausalito, or to a favorite charity.
