ALFRED J. AZEVEDO
Dr. Alfred J. Azevedo of Tiburon, retired long-time educator and a civic leader, died today in a local hospital after a short illness. He was 68.
Azevedo was the husband of former Marin County Planning Commissioner Margaret Azevedo.
He was born and reared in Oakland and earned his bachelor’s degree at San Jose State University and his master’s and doctor’s degrees at the University of California, Berkeley.
Before World War II, he was a community center director for the Oakland Recreation Department and a teacher in the Oakland public schools.
He and his wife, the former Margaret Wood, were married in 1940.
Azevedo was drafted into the Army in 1942 and rose to the rank of captain at the time of his discharge in 1946. He spent two years in the European Theater and earned the Bronze Star and also served as an instructor in the Army Information School in Pennsylvania.
After the war he became registrar at Benjamin Franklin Adult School in San Francisco and later principal of Pacific Heights Adult School, where he served from 1953 to 1971. He also was a lecturer in adult education for the University of California.
In 1972 he served as a consultant in adult education to the West German government and from 1971 to 1977 he was director of Pacific Heights Community College Center in San Francisco.
Azevedo had lived in Tiburon 29 years and he served on the Tiburon Fire Commission and the Reed School District board during the 1950s.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Joseph Azevedo of Tiburon, and a daughter, Janet Azevedo of Monterey.
A memorial service will be held at a time to be announced.

A notice in the Aug. 9. 1980 issue of the I.J. announced the memorial service would be held on Friday, Aug. 15 at the Outdoor Art Club in Mill Valley.
