MARY SCOWN
Novato Lady Passed Away
Died
SCOWN - In Novato, Marin County, January 4, Mary Scown, wife of A.G. Scown, and mother of Richard, John, and E.J. Connell, and sister of the late John Kehleher, a native of Ireland, aged 75 years.
Death made another unwelcome visit to Novato last Wednesday and claimed Mrs. Adolph Scown, one of the last of the old pioneers of that locality. At the time of her death she was surrounded by her husband and sons, who, though the end has long been expected, were sorrow stricken when brought face to face with the grim visitor.
The funeral was held on Saturday from the little Catholic Church, the ground for which had years before been donated by the dead woman. It was one of the longest funerals ever held in Novato. People came from all over the county to pay their last respects to one that they had loved for years.
At the church a solemn Requiem High Mass was celebrated by Father Riley, who delivered a beautifully eloquent sermon on the deceased, her life, her character, and the useful lesson that they pointed others to. The interment was held at the family plot in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
The pallbearers were: George Atchley, Louis Devoto, Thomas Holloran, Edward Scouler and A. Pacheco.
Mrs. Scown was the mother of County Recorder Eugene Connell, John Connell, and Richard Connell of this city. Her first husband died in Novato in 1872 or a few hours after they came to this county. In 1882 she married Adolph Scown.
She was a woman of lovable character who will long be remembered by her friends and neighbors with a feeling of reverence.
