THOMAS A. CHARLES

A private funeral service was held today in Mill Valley for Thomas A. Charles of Tucson, Ariz., a former longtime resident of Marin County. He died in Tucson on Sunday. He was 68.

A native of Ontario, Canada, he was raised in Woodacre. As an adult, he lived in Tiburon, Corte Madera, San Rafael and Novato before moving to Clear Lake and then Tucson.

He had lived in Marin for about 30 years.

He went to sea in the Merchant Marines for about 18 to 20 years and then spent four years in the Navy during World War II. After being discharged from the Navy, he worked as a ship’s clerk in San Francisco checking cargo going off and on ships. He retired about five years ago.

Charles was a member of the Ship Clerks Local Union No. 34 of San Francisco.

He is survived by his wife, Ann M. Charles of Tucson, Ariz.; and a daughter, Maureen Allison of Mill Valley.

Burial will be in Mount Tamalpais Cemetery, San Rafael. The family prefers memorial gifts to the International Longshoremen’s and Warehousemen’s Union Pensioners Fund Blood Bank, 400 North Point St., San Francisco 94133.
