In Memoriam
Dedication of Glass Windows Honors Lieutenant Constable
The Right Reverend Karl Morgan Block, DD, will unveil and dedicate the three stained glass windows over the main altar at Christ Episcopal Church in Sausalito next Sunday, October 8 (sic), at the 11 a.m. service. The center window is erected in memory of Lieutenant Godfrey (Peter) Constable who was killed in action against the enemy on December 5, 1944, and who is buried on Leyte.
The window portrays in stained glass Christ, the King, while the background is designed particularly as a memorial. The wide decorated border is relieved with shields – the one at the apex of the window containing the flag of the church, and those at the springing line contain the Eagle, emblematic of the United States, and the lion rampart of England.
The border is also decorated with medallions containing anchors and, alternately, the sloop Albatross, which Peter sailed around the Bay for many years.
Near the bottom of the window are two more shields with the Stars and Stripes and the Union Jack. These decorations represent the two democratic nations for which Lieutenant Constable both fought and died. Although he spent nearly all of his life in the United States, he was born in England.
The windows on each side are the gift of Frank Lee and the background is designed in harmony with the center window. These windows represent some of the best work of Harold Cummings, a resident of Belvedere, and president of the Stained Glass Association of America.
The lieutenant was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Constable of Sausalito.
