JULIET KRAEGER

A memorial service for Juliet Kraeger, a longtime activist in park and open space preservation in Corte Madera and Larkspur, will be held at 2 p.m. Sept. 21, at the Corte Madera Recreation Center.

Mrs. Kraeger died Tuesday at Ross General Hospital. She was 79.

She was long known and honored for her tireless efforts to preserve open space and develop parks in the area.

Mrs. Kraeger was named “citizen of the year” in 1973 in Corte Madera in recognition of her dedication to the environment.

She was also honored in 1976 as the outstanding recreation commissioner for the five Western states area. She had been nominated for the award by the California Park and Recreation Society.

Mrs. Kraeger was first appointed to the parks and recreation commission in the 1950s because of her degree in biology and interest in all things natural. She led efforts to turn the central marsh and ponding area into what finally became Corte Madera Town Park.

She led fights against development of the land, saying it could become a “green oasis” in the heart of the town.

Mrs. Kraeger was born in Watsonville and was reared in San Francisco. She graduated from University of California at Berkeley and taught high school biology for nine years in the San Joaquin Valley.

She moved to Larkspur as a bride and lived there three years before moving to Corte Madera.

She was also an active member of the Friends of the Larkspur Library and the Larkspur-Corte Madera Historical Society.

She is survived by her husband Alfred Kraeger of Corte Madera; two children, Spring and Brook; and two sisters, Genevieve Malmstrom and Jeanette Young.

The family prefers that memorial donations be made to the Marin Conservation League, the Marin Historical Society, the American Friends Service Committee or the Nature Conservancy.
