CAPT. EDWARD R. MOORE

Edward Robert Moore, a retired captain and longtime spokesman for the Golden Gate Bridge, died Saturday at the Seton Medical Center in Daly City after an illness. He was 76.

Moore, who lived in San Francisco, retired in 1971 after 32 years of what he termed “a mouthful of bridgework.”

His role as public relations spokesman for the bridge started when he spoke at a daughter’s school event, which quickly earned him a reputation as a facile spinner of “humorous and factual stories” about his experiences on the bridge. The bridge management eagerly employed his talents and he often spoke four or five times a week throughout the district, including at the Bohemian Grove encampment.

A professional musician before he went to work on the bridge as a toll collector, Moore said he coined the phrase, “I found a million-dollar baby in a five-cent store.” He wrote the line in a union newsletter and it was picked up and made famous by a songwriter.

He was a life member of Musicians Union Local No. 6 and of the Knights of St. Cecilia’s Parish.

His wife, Marie Moore, preceded him in death. He is survived by three daughters, Marilyn Dineen of San Rafael, Constance O’Connor of Ross and Adrienne Moore of Larkspur, and six grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be said at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday at St. Cecilia’s Church in San Francisco. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery in Colma. The rosary will be recited this evening at 8 at the church.

His family asked that memorial contributions go to the Arthritis Foundation, North Bay Branch, 1010 Lootens Place, San Rafael, 94941.
