THEODORE M. KNIESCHE

A memorial service was held Tuesday for Theodore Max Kniesche Sr., patriarch of the family which owns Schroeder’s Café in San Francisco.

The private service was held at the home of Mr. Kniesche’s son, Theodore Max Kniesche Jr. of Kentfield.

The senior Mr. Kniesche died in his sleep Sunday at his home in San Francisco at the age of 97.

Mr. Kniesche was born in Germany and began driving a bread wagon when he was 12. At the age of 15, he went to sea as a waiter and steward aboard passenger ships.

He came to San Francisco shortly after the turn of the century and went to work as a waiter. In 1922 he purchased Schoeder’s (sic), believed to be the third oldest restaurant in the city, from the widow of the founder.

Schroeder’s, which specializes in German food like sauerbraten and knackwurst, long had a policy of men-only at lunchtime. However, in 1970, Mr. Kniesche bowed to changing times and began admitting women.

The restaurant has been in several locations, including its present one on Front Street.

In addition to his business, Mr. Kniesche was a longtime member of the Olympic Club and the St. Francis Yacht Club.

His wife, Anna, died earlier. In addition to his son, Mr. Kniesche is survived by three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The son and two of the grandchildren currently operate the restaurant.

The family asked that memorial contributions go to the Guide Dogs for the Blind in San Rafael.

A Death Notice in the same paper names his grandchildren, Alma Lutz, Linda Ann and Theodore Max Kniesche III; great-grandchildren names are Theodore Max IV and Mark Wells Kniesche.
