Death of Myron B. Jones
Falls Off the Steamer Ukiah at the Ferry Slip at Tiburon
Early last Sunday morning the sad news of the death at Tiburon of Myron B. Jones, who was well known in the music circles of this city, reached San Rafael.
He had gone to the city Saturday and was returning on the Broad Gauge theater boat. As the steamer reached the wharf at Tiburon and the passengers were all hurrying to catch the train, Mr. Jones, who was one of the last to leave the boat, was seen to approach the edge of the apron connecting the boat to the slip, and suddenly disappear into the depths below.
Those who saw the accident, if it was such, say that it happened very quickly. Even the first mate of the vessel who was standing a few feet in front of Mr. Jones on the left side of the apron did not seen him go over. N. T. O’Brien, of San Francisco, one of the passengers was walking a short distance in from of him and happened to see him approach the edge and then fall over. O’Brien shouted out that a man had fallen over board and immediately J. A. Silva, deck hand, ran to the place where Jones had disappeared, jumped to a cement pillar that stood about two feet above the water, and prepared to grasp the body as it came up but nothing was seen of the unfortunate man. A strong ebb tide was flowing and the current carried him out and away. A half hour’s search in a small boat proved futile and the vessel departed for the city, leaving the night watchman of the wharf to continue the search.
The body was found at about 4:15 o’clock from 150 to 200 feet from the place where the accident occurred, lying on the bottom in shallow water.
Coroner Eden was notified and Sunday the body was brought to San Rafael.
The inquest was held Tuesday morning at the undertaking parlors of Coroner Eden. Al evidence showed that the light at the slip was sufficient to enable anyone to see clearly the way off the boat. The witnesses could not say whether Mr. Jones had fallen or jumped overboard. The verdict of the jury was that he came to death by accidental drowning he having gallen from the apron of the freight ferry slip at Tiburon while attempting to go ashore from the ferry steamer Ukiah.
The funeral was held at the home of Dr. W. F. Jones, brother of the deceased, Tuesday morning at ten o’clock. The burial took place at Mt. Tamalpais Cemetery.
