GAIL APPERSON

Gail Apperson, Marin county treasurer for the past 12 years, died last night, victim of a cerebral Hemorrhage. He became ill Monday and was taken to Fort Miley veterans hospital where he died.

This morning the board of supervisors appointed M. F. (Frank) Donohue to the treasurer’s office in addition to his position as tax collector.

A native of Missouri, Apperson came to Marin county 29 years ago. He operated the Marin credit association before becoming treasurer. He served as chairman of the board of supervisors before resigning in 1939 to become treasurer.

Apperson, 55, was very active in fraternal organizations, and was past commander of San Anselmo Post No. 179, American Legion and Past President of the San Rafael Lions Club.

Other organizations he belonged to included Marin Lodge, F. and A. M., San Rafael Lodge of Sciots, San Rafael Aerie Eagles, San Rafael Post VFW, and Society of 40 and 8.

Apperson is survived by his wife, Phyllis, who lives on Norwood avenue in Ross. He also leaves two brothers, A. G. Apperson of Burlingame, and Ray Apperson of Georgia, and six sisters, Mrs. Bessie Smith and Mrs. Belle Thompson of Montebello, Mrs. Lena Loder of Yakima, Washington, Mrs. Mabel Stevens of Placerville, Mrs. Myra Brinkerhoff of Belvedere, and Mrs. Clemence Groves of New York City.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 3 p.m. at Halstead and Company Mortuary in San Francisco. Legion services will be Thursday at 8 p.m.

Meeting this morning, the supervisors decided to combine the offices of tax collector and treasurer. County Clerk George Jones said the coming job survey report of the Kroeger firm will recommend such a move. Donahue (sic) has agreed to resign if the arrangement is found unlawful.

Donohue has been tax collector since 1931 and previously served for 25 years as a conductor on the Northwestern Pacific railroad. He is 65 years old and is a native of Marin, born at Tocoloma. He lives at 1965 Fifth avenue, San Rafael.

Although friends said Apperson succumbed to a cerebral hemorrhage, Ft. Miley officials declined to verify the cause of death and the San Rafael physician who had cared for the treasurer said he did not know exactly what would be entered on the death certificate, since he was not present when Apperson died.
