San Rafael Man Loses Life When Hit By N.W.P. Train At San Anselmo

Failing to hear the approach of a Northwestern Pacific electric at the Ross street crossing in San Anselmo last Monday, Frank Grubert, a roofer, of San Rafael, was fatally injured when the train struck his wagon, demolishing it and hurling him thirty yards from the track.

He was removed at once to the West End Sanitarium, where he passed away two hours later without regaining consciousness.

Witnesses say that Grubert got on the track before appearing to notice that a train was coming. He tried to back his horse, but the animal forged ahead, just far enough to escape being hit. The car caught the wagon and tore if from the horse, which dashed down the street unhurt. The wagon was carried several yards by the train.

Dr. Kuser and Dr. O. W. Jones attended Grubert. An examination revealed that he had sustained a fractured skull and a dislocated hip, and that he was injured internally. As an indication that Grubert’s horse was unmanageable, residents of Fairfax report that he narrowly escaped injury Sunday, the day before the fatal accident, when his horse backed over a steep bank near the incline railway.

Grubert leaves a sorrowing widow, Mrs. Ernestine Grubert, and two children, Ernest and Elma Grubert. The funeral was held yesterday at St. Raphael’s Church and burial was made in Mt. Olivet cemetery under the direction of Dr. F. E. Sawyer.
