ORIE ESTEBY

Orie Esteby, a former longtime Marin resident who worked in the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge, died last Wednesday in a convalescent hospital in San Jose after a brief illness.

Mr. Esteby was 79 years old.

He was born in Nebraska and moved to Marin County 70 years ago, living most of those years in Larkspur.

He worked as a crane operator on the construction of the bridge and was injured in an accident. While he was on the job one day, a cable snapped and broke his back, according to his daughter, Shirley Bernal of San Jose.

“He was not supposed to walk again,” Bernal said. “But he did and, in fact, he played tennis almost until the day he died.”

After the bridge project, he worked for many years as a barber in Larkspur. He retired about 20 years ago.

He also is survived by another daughter, Joan Smith of San Jose; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

No services are planned at his request.

His ashes will be scattered near the Golden Gate Bridge.
