Grocer James Mayers Of Stinson Beach Dies

James B. (Jimmy) Mayers, long-time Stinson Beach grocer, died yesterday in a local hospital after a short illness. He was 85.

He was born in Maine and left there when he was 15 to come to California. He worked as a sailmaker in San Francisco until he entered the service. He served in the Army in France during World War I.

In 1920 after the war, he started the Bungalow grocery store in Stinson Beach in what was then a wheat field. He and his wife, the late Isabelle Lawrence Mayer, ran the grocery and watched the community of Stinson Beach grow. He was honored by the Marin County Board of Supervisors five years ago on his 80th birthday. He was active in the business until last week.

Mr. Mayer was a member of the Mill Valley Post of the American Legion.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Monday, at St. Raphael’s Church, San Rafael. Recitation of the rosary will be at 8 p.m. Sunday at Keaton’s Mortuary, San Rafael. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, San Rafael.
