JOSEPH SCHWARTZ

A funeral has been held at Sinai Memorial Chapel in San Francisco for Joseph Schwartz, a retired San Rafael merchant.

Mr. Schwartz died Friday at Rafael Convalescent Hospital in San Rafael after a brief illness. He was 85.

Mr. Schwartz, a native of Austria, came to the United States when he was a child. In 1958, he moved from New York to San Rafael. He and his wife, Ella Schwartz, operated Ella Joseph women’s clothing store on Fourth Street in San Rafael for 25 years. Mr. Schwartz retired in 1983.

He also was a longtime member of B’nai B’rith.

In addition to his wife of 58 years, Mr. Schwartz is survived by a daughter, Ruth Jonas of San Rafael, and a grandchild.

Burial was in Salem Memorial Park in San Francisco.
