RAYMOND F. MERZ

Raymond F. Merz of San Rafael, owner and operator of Merz Brothers general contractors, died at his home Friday after an illness.

Merz was born in San Francisco but his family moved to San Rafael when he was a child. He attended St. Raphael’s School and San Rafael High School and served with the Army Signal Corps and the Corps of Engineers during World War II.

After the war, he established his contracting business in San Francisco and later moved the firm to San Rafael. He was a member of the Associated General Contractors and the Men’s Club at St. Raphael’s Church.

Surviving are his wife, Patricia, of San Rafael; three daughters, Peggy Merz of San Rafael, Anne Lee of Novato, and Marjorie Fennell of San Jose; two sons, David Merz of Petaluma and John Merz of Sonoma; his mother, Bertha Merz of Greenbrae; three sisters, Roberta Knittel of Redwood City, Lois Bevans of San Rafael, Lorraine Merz of Verona, Italy; two brothers, Frank Merz of Gazelle, Siskiyou County, and Harold Merz of San Rafael; and six grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Monday at St. Raphael’s Church. Burial will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery in San Rafael. The rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Sunday at St. Raphael’s. The family prefers that memorial contributions be made to the Hanna Boys Center, P.O. Box 100, Sonoma, or to Hospice of Marin, 77 Mark Drive, San Rafael, 94903.

A Death Notice in the same paper states that he was predeceased by his brother, Leonard Merz.
