Impressive Funeral

Amidst a floral display that has seldom been equaled in Marin County, the last rites for FRED W. SWEETSER, were conducted last Saturday by the Masonic fraternity at their temple in San Rafael.

The services were attended by a large number of persons from all parts of Marin County and included business and political associates.

A squad of traffic officers, headed by Captain A.F. O'Connor, acted as escort to the cortege to the Novato Cemetery where interment took place.

FRED W. SWEETSER, County Supervisor from the Fifth District, passed away at Novato on Thursday of last week, as the result of a heart attack.

The stroke came as he was entering his automobile preparatory to driving to Novato. He had directed employees to drive ahead in a truck, saying that he felt dizzy and would follow in a few minutes.

Upon their return 30 minutes later, he was found sitting behind the wheel, dead.

Sweetser was a member of one of the most prominent pioneer families of Marin County. He was the son of John R. Sweetser, who came to the county in 1857 and acquired land in the Novato grant and the family has resided at the same ranch since.

Sweetser first ran for the office of Supervisor in 1914 and was defeated by G. Pacheco who received 351 votes to 350 for Sweetser. Sweetser contested the election, and on January 5, 1915, Judge Edgar T. Zook declared Pacheco elected. The case was appealed to the Superior Court and on March 24, 1916, Sweetser was declared elected by 342 votes to 341 for Pacheco.

Sweetser took office at that time and has been returned at each election since that time. He has been chairman of the hospital and poor farm communities since the first of January.

Sweetser is survived by his widow, Mrs. Henrietta Sweetser and one sister, Mrs. James B. BURDELL.

Appointment of a Supervisor to fill the vacancy caused by Sweetser's death will be in the hands of Governor C.C. Young.
