BUNNY LUCHETA

Bunny Lucheta, who served for eight years as Republican state Senator Peter Bahr’s chief aide and then for 11 years as a senior staff official for Democratic Senator Barry Keene, died Monday of a heart attack. She was 64.

Mrs. Lucheta, never known by her formal first name of Ezilda, was for many years one of Marin County’s most effective political figures. When Behr retired from the Senate, both Keene and his Republican opponent, Gary Giacomini, told her that they wanted her to join their staff if they were elected. So did the Democratic and Republican candidates for Assembly.

Political leaders recalled Mrs. Lucheta’s extraordinary political acumen and her skill and good nature in dealing with constituents. She was in charge of Keene’s district headquarters, first in Petaluma and then, when district lines changed, in Vallejo.

Mrs. Lucheta was also an active volunteer in school advisory organizations, conservation groups and the Marin Council for Civic Affairs. She served for eight years as a board member of the Family Service Agency of Marin County.

She lived in Greenbrae. Mrs. Lucheta is survived by her husband, Harry; a daughter, Lisa, of San Francisco; a son, Paul, of Greenbrae, and her mother, Ezilda Torre, of San Francisco.

A memorial service will be held in early November.
