KATHERINE BABINSKY

San Rafael - Katherine Babinsky, a 14-year resident of San Rafael, who was named Marin County Senior Citizen of the Year in 1969, died Thursday in a local hospital after a long illness. She was 83.

She was named citizen of the year for her full-time volunteer work with the American Red Cross, the American Heart Association, Easter Seal Society, Tuberculosis and Health Association, Marin Senior Coordinating Council and the Marin Association for Mental Health.

A native of Hungary, she immigrated to the United States at age 15. Her family settled in Cleveland, Ohio, where she lived until moving to San Rafael.

She was the manager of the Laurel Place apartment complex in San Rafael for the last 12 years.

Before that she and her husband, the late Michael Babinsky, operated a delicatessen in Cleveland for 45 years.

She was a member of the San Rafael Improvement Club and was well known for baking Hungarian pastries. She also belonged to the Marin Motion Picture and Television Council.

She is survived by her daughter, Yolanda E. Godfrey of San Rafael, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Inurnment will be at Mount Tamalpais Cemetery, San Rafael.

A memorial tribute will be held for her at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in the San Rafael Improvement Club.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers that donations be sent to the American Cancer Society or the memorial fund of the San Rafael Improvement Club.
