BRUCE McCOY
Retired probation officer

Bruce McCoy of Corte Madera, a retired San Quentin Prison parole officer and longtime Marin resident, died Saturday, July 28, 1990, at Kaiser Hospital in Terra Linda after a battle against cancer. He was 89.

Mr. McCoy was born in Iowa and earned a bachelor’s degree from Ellsworth College in Iowa Falls, He did graduate work at the University of Wisconsin.

He worked as a probation officer in New York City and Great Falls, Mont., in the 1930s and 1940s.

In 1948, he moved to Marin to work at San Quentin Prison. He retired in 1964.

He lived in Mill Valley before moving to Corte Madera in 1970.

Mr. McCoy traveled extensively in Europe and Asia, pursuing interests in drawing, sculpting and ceramics. He was an avid reader with a special interest in history, science and philosophy.

He was a staunch supporter of women’s rights.

Survivors include a son, Preston McCoy of Novato; two daughters, Elizabeth Glasier of San Diego and Janet Snow of Brea, Orange County; a niece, Floy Douglas of Corte Madera; and five grandchildren. His wife, Bertha McCoy, died in 1958.

A private memorial service will be held.

His family asked that memorial contributions go to Planned Parenthood, American Cancer Society or Hospice of Marin.
