HELENE JOHNSON
Helene Johnson, one of Marin County’s oldest citizens, died this morning. She was 105.
A native of Minnesota, Mrs. Johnson had lived with her widowed daughter-in-law, Evelyn Johnson, in Loma Verde, until 1978 when she entered a San Rafael convalescent home.
Born in 1875, Mrs. Johnson traveled to Seattle in 1902, moving to San Francisco, where she married Rollo Johnson in 1903.
She and her husband were survivors of the 1906 earthquake but their flat was demolished and all their possessions were lost. After the quake she spent a year with relatives in several states before moving to Oakland.
Mrs. Johnson, a furrier since she was 15, started her own furrier shop in 1907.
Following her husband’s death in 1944, Mrs. Johnson lived with her son and daughter-in-law. Her son, Elmer, died in 1962.
Mrs. Johnson attributed her long life to her religion, the United School of Christianity, which she embraced for 75 years.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
