S. F. Firm Co-Founder Dies At 91

Joseph H. Marshall, 91, co-founder of a San Francisco hardware firm, died last night at his home on Lagunitas Road in Ross. His health had been failing for several months.

Marshall was a 50-year resident of Ross. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. W. Gordon Swett of Ross, and by two grandchildren. He is a former vestryman of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Ross.

He went to work at the age of 14 for a San Francisco hardware store. In February of 1906 he and the late G. Fred Newell of San Anselmo founded the Marshall-Newell Supply Co. in San Francisco. Two months later they were virtually wiped out by the earthquake and fire.

The partners re-established their hardware firm. When Marshall retired in 1956 he was president of the company. The company now has its offices in South San Francisco. Marshall maintained an active interest in its affairs until his death.

He was a member of Marin Lodge 191, Free and Accepted Masons; Commonwealth Club of California; Islam Temple of San Francisco; Marin Chapter 102, Royal Arch Masons of California; and Knight Templar Golden Gate Commandery 16.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John’s Church, Ross, under the direction of Keaton’s Mortuary, San Rafael. Entombment will be private.
