VIRGINIA M. McKEEVER
Virginia May McKeever of San Rafael, retired librarian for the Marin Independent Journal, died Thursday, Feb. 22, 1990, at home after a lengthy illness. She was 63.
She was born in San Francisco and was a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley. She lived in Marin since 1951.
Mrs. McKeever worked 10 years in the Independent Journal Library, retiring in the summer of 1988. She was known for her lively wit, intelligence and ability to quickly find clipping files in the midst of deadline pressures.
Reporters also appreciated her great ability for nearly instant recall of names, dates and events.
As the parent of a developmentally disabled child, Mrs. McKeever and her husband, John Thomas McKeever, were instrumental in founding North Bay Industries, a training program for developmentally disables persons.
She was active in t he founding of the Marin Association for Retarded Citizens, acting as its director at one point. In addition, she was actively involved in the Special Olympics and in encouraging the development of special education programs in Marin County schools.
Mrs. McKeever also was an avid reader and gardener, taking pride in her impressive flower garden.
In addition to her husband of 41 years, she is survived by two sons, John Thomas McKeever Jr. of San Anselmo and Stephen Douglas of San Rafael; a daughter, Nancy Funk of Petaluma, and five grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the Mount Tamalpais Cemetery Chapel.
The family prefers that memorial contributions be made to the Marin Association for Retarded Citizens, 70 Skyview Terrace, San Rafael 94903.
