Jeanette Suntzeff
Social Worker

Jeanette Lydia Suntzeff of Corte Madera had a distinguished career in Bay Area social welfare.

She died of emphysema March 19 at Kaiser hospital in Terra Linda. She was 72.

She was born Jeanette Lydia Argo in St. Louis, Mo. She graduated with a bachelor's degree from Harris Teachers College in 1943 and received her master's degree in social welfare from Washington University in 1948.

After living in Tacoma, Wash., and San Francisco, she settled in Corte Madera in 1956. She worked as a psychiatric social worker and supervisor for the San Francisco Red Cross, the Marin County Department of Social Services and as supervisor of Child Protective Services for Contra Costa Department of Social Services.

Mrs. Suntzeff was associated with the Red Cross, League of Women Voters, the Corte Madera Women's Improvement Club and the Audubon Society.

"She was devoted to her work," said her son, Nicholas Suntzeff of La Serena, Chile. "She also enjoyed hiking, the outdoors in Marin and supported many environmental groups in their efforts."

Mrs. Suntzeff is survived by her husband of 52 years, Nicholsa Suntzeff of Corte Madera; a daughter, Nina Zagaris of Modesto; a brother, Edward Argo of St. Louis, Mo.; and three grandchildren.

A memorial will be placed at the Serbian Cemetery in Colma. Arrangements were made by the Neptune Society.
