PHILIP JOSEPH MURRAY
Former Marin resident

Philip Joseph Murray of Port Hueneme, a former Marin resident, died Saturday, Feb. 10, 1990, at St. John’s Hospital in Oxnard after a lengthy illness. He was 86.

Mr. Murray was born in Sausalito and lived in Kentfield before moving to Oxnard.

He was considered a pioneer crop duster in Ventura County. He owned Murray Aviation in Oxnard for 50 years and was considered a leader in the crop dusting industry. He was elected to the hall of fame for the National Agriculture Aviation Association.

Mr. Murray also started the crop dusting program in Hawaii before it became a state and was called to Spain and Portugal to assist in starting programs thee. He was also a distributor for Cessna aircraft in both California and Hawaii.

During World War II he served as a civilian flight instructor at Mira Loma. He was a member of the Quiet Birds, Knights of Columbus, Oxnard Elks Club, and was past president of the California Agriculture Aviation Association.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Murray of Point Hueneme; two daughters, Dorothy M. Taketa of Sacramento and Linda M. Markov of Oceanside; a sister, Estelle Petersen of San Rafael; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A son, Philip James Murray, died while crop-dusting in Hawaii in 1967.

A funeral Mass was to be celebrated today at Santa Clara Church in Oxnard. Burial will be at Santa Clara Cemetery.

Arrangements were by the James A. Reardon Mortuary in Oxnard.
