WALTER S. MIKEL
Heavy equipment operator
Walter S. Mikel of Stinson Beach died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 1990, at Marin General Hospital after a short illness. He was 86.
Mr. Mikel was a native of Colorado.
During World War II, Mr. Mikel served as a Navy Seabee in the Pacific.
Mr. Mikel moved to Marin in 1945. He worked for many years for the county as a heavy equipment operator, retiring in 1966.
Until 1982, Mr. Mikel and his wife operated the Parkside restaurant and snack bar in Stinson Beach.
Mr. Mikel took up the hobby of hooking rugs after his retirement and often referred to himself as “the happy hooker.”
Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Marian C. Mikel of Stinson Beach.
At his request, there was no funeral. Burial will be at Mount Tamalpais Cemetery in San Rafael.
His family prefers memorial gifts to West Marin Senior Services, Point Reyes Station, 94956.
