MAE KIRNER
Mae P. Kirner, longtime San Rafael resident who operated a candy store with her late husband for many years, died today in a local rest home after an illness of four months. She was 95.
Mrs. Kirner was born and reared in Des Moines, Iowa, but came to California in 1901. She and her husband, Guy Kirner, moved to San Rafael in 1911. Mrs. Kirner’s home was on Forbes Avenue for many years.
The Kirners were longtime owners of Hoover’s Candy Store on Fourth Street in the block that now houses Penney’s and Macy’s. The business was later renamed Kirner’s Candy Store.
Kirner died in 1941.
Mrs. Kirner was a member of the Women’s Society of the First Presbyterian Church of San Rafael.
She is survived by her daughter, Blanche Schieck of San Rafael, a granddaughter and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Chapel of the Hills in San Anselmo. Inurnment will be private.
The family prefers memorial gifts to a favorite charity.
