Fatal Highway Accident Takers Herman Hoerling
Roadhouse Owner Is Instantly Killed Sunday Night

Herman Hoerling, 64 year old partner in the White Spot, roadside café south of San Rafael, was instantly killed on Sunday night, when he was hit by a car while walking along the highway north of the San Quentin Wye.

The fatal accident occurred at 10:30 and Staff Sgt. George E. Posner, 21, of Hamilton Field, 29th Pursuit Squadron was held for investigation by Post authorities.

Deputy Coroner Frank Keaton says his investigation shows the accident was unavoidable. Posner told authorities he was returning to the Field from the Richmond Ferry when strong headlights from approaching traffic cut off his view of the side of the road. Suddenly he realized he had hit something.

Posner immediately stopped his car, and running back, found Hoerling lying at the roadside. He carried the injured man into a nearby service station and called an ambulance, but the man was pronounced dead on arrival at Cottage Hospital.

Funeral service was held in San Francisco Tuesday. Mr. Hoerling leaves his wife, Mrs. Ida Hoerling; daughter, Miss Mable Hoerling of San Francisco.
