Aged Matron Who Jumped From Burning Home, Dies

Mrs. Matilda “Tillie” Haarer, 74, who temporarily averted death Saturday by jumping from the upper story of her burning home in Sausalito, died yesterday at a local hospital.

Funeral services are pending today, with the body removed to the Robert E. Russell Mortuary in Mill Valley.

Mrs. Haarer suffered a fractured skull and other injuries as a result of her jump. Had she delayed the plunge a few seconds, her life would have been saved by a neighbor who was placing a ladder against her home.

The aged Sausalito matron was just recovering from a broken limb as the result of a fall last year when she was forced to make the 35-foot jump Saturday morning. She had been a resident of Sausalito for about four years.

Firemen were forced to return to the scene of the blaze, 310 Fourth street, at 4:30 p.m. Saturday when smouldering mattresses flared into flames.
