JAMES M. FOWLE

Col. Fowle died Saturday, July 4, 1987, at Letterman Hospital in San Francisco after a short illness. He was 66.

He was born in Fort Benning, Ga., and moved often with his parents throughout the United States and other countries, living on military bases while his father was in the military service.

He excelled in track and football in high school, a family member said.

Col. Fowle enlisted in the Army Air corps in 1942 and served in WWII as a fighter pilot with the 364th Fighter Group based in England. He became captain of the squadron in 1944.

During his career, he received the Distinguished Flying Cross 10 times. He also received 15 air medals and other numerous military awards.

He was the commander of the 36th Air Rescue Squadron in Japan from 1955-1958. He then became the Deputy Base Commander at Ellsworth Air Force Base in Rapid City, S.D., until his retirement in 1966.

He was a manager of Dandeleau Limited, a[n] import-export business, based in Ignacio, and he was member of the Marin County Rod and Gun Club.

He also (sic) is survived by two other sons, Thomas V. Fowle of Rohnert Park and Robert M. Fowle of Seattle; a daughter, Theresa J. Fowle of Seattle; three brothers, Daniel G. Fowle of Mountain View, Robert A. Fowle of Washington, N.C., and F. Hayward Fowle of Fairbanks; and two grandchildren.

His wife, Dorothy Claire Fowle, died earlier.

At Col. Fowle’s request, his ashes will be scattered at sea.

The family has asked that memorial donations in his name be made to the American Heart Association or to the Marin County Humane Society.
