BERNARD SACCONE

A funeral Mass for Bernard 'Ben' Saccone will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at Saint Raphael's Catholic Church in San Rafael. He died on Jan. 16 in Palm Desert. He was 89.
Mr. Saccone was born in Italy and came to America as a child. He lived in San Rafael.
He began his career in the grocery business during the 1920s, driving a horse-drawn delivery wagon. He worked with Great Western Food Stores before opening the first United Market in Marin County.
He and his brother, Joe, then opened up a store in San Anselmo. The brothers also operated the Saccone Brothers grocery warehouse.
Mr. Saccone enjoyed golf.
He is survived by his wife, Dora Saccone of San Rafael; two daughters, Clare Bowen of Santa Rosa and Lois Dito of Petaluma; a son, Frederick Saccone of Idaho; a brother, Joseph Saccone of San Rafael; a sister, Catherine Erro of Fresno; 10 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

A Death Notice in the same paper mentions that Mr. Saccone's brother, Frederick, was of Sand Point, Idaho. Committal was at Holy Cross Cemetery, Colma.
