FRENCH, Thomas Lockwood - 87, died of cancer on March 17 at Veteran's Hospital in Palo Alto. Tom was a retired Commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve, having 32 years of active and inactive service. During World War II, Tom served in active duty aboard three submarines: the USS S-13, the USS Grouper and the USS Raton. He saw overseas service in the Canal Zone in Panama, in Australia and in the Philippines. During the Korean conflict, Tom was Commanding Officer of the U.S. Naval Reserve Submarine Training Center at the San Francisco Naval Shipyard. Later, he served in the Reserve as a Training Officer at Treasure Island and Alameda Navy facilities. Tom spent his youth in Tulsa, OK., and Detroit, MI. His grandfather, Marcus L. Lockwood, was an oil pioneer who gained a national reputation for fighting the oil company monopolies and for serving as a key organizer and first President of the American Anti-Trust League. Tom married Jeanne Crowe in 1948, and the couple moved to San Francisco in 1951 and to San Bruno in 1952. When Tom left active military duty, he pursued a career in commercial real estate and worked for various firms in San Mateo and Palo Alto. He also worked in the installation of coin-operated laundry businesses throughout the Bay Area. Tom was an avid sailor and golfer, and was a long-time member of the Presidio Golf Club. He also enjoyed gardening and, until recently, could be found working in the San Bruno Community Garden. He remained active in U.S. Submarine Veterans of World War II. Tom leaves his wife, Jeanne C. French of San Bruno; daughter, Barbara J. French of Mill Valley; daughter, Elizabeth "Lisa" French of Santa Barbara; sister-in-law, Ann French of San Francisco, and grandchildren Nicolas and Skyler French of Mill Valley. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 6, 2002, 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Burlingame, 1500 Easton Dr., Burlingame. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Veteran's Hospital, Hospice Care Center, Unit 102C, 3801 Miranda Drive, Palo Alto, CA 94304. Cremated remains will be inurned at Golden Gate National Cemetery.
