Edward G. Stopper

Edward G. Stopper of San Anselmo, a Marin resident for 58 years, died yesterday in a Novato convalescent hospital after an illness of three years. He was 86.

Stopper moved to California in 1895 from his native Portland, Ore. He began working in 1905 as an errand boy for Shreve and Co., in San Francisco. At the time of his retirement in 1962, he supervised the company’s manufacturing department.

He spent several years after his retirement traveling about the United States with his wife, Anita E. Stopper, who died in 1972 (sic).

As a hobby, Stopper built cabinets and furniture in the basement of his San Anselmo home. He also made lamps, candle holders and wall decorations out of brass, copper and silver.

He was a member of San Rafael Lodge 1108 B.P.O.E.

Stopper is survived by two daughters, Gloria Scott of Novato and Edith M. Schneider of Hawaii. A son, Robert F. Stopper, died in 1959.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered tomorrow at 10 a.m. at St. Anselm’s Church in San Anselmo. Recitation of the Rosary will be at 8 p.m. today at the Chapel of the Hills in San Anselmo. Intement will be in Mount Tamalpais Cemetery, San Rafael.
