BURBANK JUNG
Victim of sneaker wave

A memorial service for Burbank Jung of Novato, who died in a fishing accident Jan. 27, 1990, will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Presbyterian Church of Novato.

Mr. Jung was fishing on a boat near chimney Rock at Point Reyes National Seashore when he was swept into the sea by a large wave. His body was found Feb. 24 at San Simeon Beach, about 250 miles to the south.

Mr. Jung was born and grew up in San Francisco’s Chinatown, where he worked in his father’s photography business.

He was a veteran of World War II. When he returned from the war, his father sent him back to China to marry.

In 1951, seeking a calmer life, he moved his wife and five children to Berkeley and then, in 1960, to Novato.

Retiring 10 years ago after suffering a heart attack, he took up fishing and obtained a commercial license. But, according to his son, Doug Jung, he did not make much money because “he ate half his catch and gave the other half away.”

Novato residents remember him as the man on the mountain bike who rode to retirement homes to give away fish. Sometimes he also gave fish to people in the street.

So no one would steal his bike, he painted it ugly colors, said his son. He also painted his fishing life vest in the same manner.

“He would paint it an ugly green or mix colors that only he could like,” said his son. “Pop did some queer things, but he was a very kind, generous man.”

In addition to his son, Mr. Jung is survived by his wife, Sylvia; a daughter, Christina Iglowitz of Roseville, Sacramento County; three other sons, Richard Jung of Rohnert Park, Burbank Jung Jr. of Novato and Matthew Jung of Novato; three sisters, Lila Lim of San Francisco, Dorothy Louie of Fremont and Mary Wong of Oakland; a brother, George Jung of Oakland; and six grandchildren. A sister, Lillian Kwan, died earlier.

His ashes will be scattered at sea.
