John Rutledge Kleespies

On July 19, 2002, John left his life as he lived it, with quiet dignity. A resident of The Tamalpais in Greenbrae, CA, John was a literate, erudite, gracious, genteel and gentle man. He had an acute interest in national and world affairs. He enjoyed travel, the symphony and the arts, reading, the beauty of nature and getting together with long- time friends. He loved to entertain, did it often and with elan. His honesty, generosity of spirit and dry humor endeared him to all. John's journey began in Corpus Christi, Texas, December 13, 1915, when he was born to George and Lora Rutledge Kleespies, the youngest by many years of their seven children. He was reared and educated in Texas and Prescott, Arizona. He received his B.S. degree from Sul Ross College in Alpine, TX in 1937 and his M.B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1948. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1941-1945, attaining the rank of Major. He was recalled to service in 1952-1953. John found his niche professionally with the Pacific Gas & Electric Co. in San Francisco in several roles commencing in 1958 and culminating as Manager of Information Systems. Accomplished in his profession, he was admired as a leader and teacher. He retired in 1977. He was a member of the Commonwealth Club of San Francisco and several business and professional organizations and clubs. He resided in San Francisco for 28 years. In 1998 he moved to The Tamalpais where he quickly became an admired and loved member of the community. He is sorely missed. John was predeceased by his three sisters, three brothers and recently by a cherished nephew, David Bounds. His survivors are nephews Henry J. Kleespies, Jr., Port Arthur, TX, George T. Kleespies, Nederland, TX, W.J. Kleespies, Corpus Christi, TX, F.J. Rutledge, Ardmore, OK, and Billy G. Kleespies, Kerrville, TX, and nieces Frances Curtis, Mirando City, TX, and Freda Carpenter, Anna M. Curry and Merlene Schumacher, all of Brenham, TX, and many grandnieces and grandnephews. At John's request no services were held. Donations may be made to Hospice of Marin, 150 Nellen Avenue, Corte Madera, CA 94925.
