A memorial service has been held for sculptor and ceramicist James "J. B." Blunk, best known for the large-scale wood seating sculptures at Greens restaurant in San Francisco, the Oakland Museum and at UC Santa Cruz.

Mr. Blunk, 75, died June 15 in his Inverness home following a long illness.

Mr. Blunk, a native of Lawrence, Kan., and a graduate of UCLA, was celebrated for carving dramatic furniture from huge pieces of redwood and cypress with a chain saw.

A 2-ton sculpture titled "The Planet," carved from the base of a redwood tree, is on display at the Oakland Museum.

Mr. Blunk is survived by his wife of 33 years, Christine Nielson of Inverness, and by children Bruno Blunk and Marian Nielson of San Francisco and Rufus Blunk of Inverness.
