DUTTON, Betty Hines - 89, a former resident of Palo Alto, Menlo Park and Redwood City died October 25 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at the home of her daughter Rosalind Dutton. She was born in El Paso, Texas, July 12, 1913. She graduated from Stanford in 1935; entered the Stanford School of Nursing and in 1938, left nursing school to marry Gayle R. Dutton. The couple lived in Palo Alto during the 1940s where she was part of a group who founded St. Mark's Episcopal Church. After moving to Spokane, WA in 1950 she became very involved with Episcopal Church organizations and joined the Society of the Companions of the Holy Cross. She and her family returned to Palo Alto in 1959; in 1972 she restarted the California chapter of the Companions. She worked at Stanford in various secretarial jobs until her retirement in 1978. She is survived by her sister, Sheila Hines Mullett of Cameron Park, brother, Robert E. Hines, Jr. of Sherman Oaks, and four daughters: Valerie Dutton Hollister of Swarthmore, Pa., Sheila Dutton of Greenbrae, Patricia Dutton of San Marcos and Rosalind Dutton of Philadelphia, Pa., plus five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Her husband Gayle and fifth daughter Elizabeth "Libby" predeceased her. Services will be held at St. Mark's Church, Palo Alto, November 24 at 1:00 pm. Donations may be made for a garden to be named in her honor at the Companions' Adelynrood Retreat Center, 46 Elm Street, Byfield, MA 01922-2812.
