Sylvia Jean Marlowe
Age 80, of San Rafael passed away on April 28, 2002 after an extended illness. A native of Wisconsin, Sylvia attended Wellesley, and then the University of Wisconsin, where she received her B.A. in Art History and Psychology and her M.A. in Clinical Psychology graduating Phi Beta Kappa and receiving the Mortar Board Award. While her husband was in graduate school at the University of Chicago, she was a Clinical Psychologist at Michael Reese Hospital. Following their move to the Bay Area, Sylvia worked as a Psychologist for the S.F. Unified School District, serving eight schools. In their early years, Sylvia served in Marin as the President of the League of Women Voters, and in later years, following her quilting hobby, founded one of Marin's quilting groups. She found that one of the highlights in her quilting experience was her national sale ... promoted by the Center ... of 100 of her quilts with all the proceeds donated to the Southern Poverty Law Center. Sylvia leaves her beloved husband, Melvin Marlowe, with whom she had celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary on New Year's eve; her beloved sons, Jonathan Marlowe of San Rafael and Christopher Marlowe of Paris, France; a sister, who resides in Dallas, Texas, and another sister and brother, both residents of Wisconsin. Following the raising of her family, Sylvia returned to her profession, as a Clinical Psychologist at the UCSF Hospital, then as a Family Therapist at Children's Hospital in S.F., and later, as a Psychologist for Marin's School for the Deaf, including group therapy for parents of deaf children. Sylvia was always there for others. In accordance with her prior expressed wishes, there will not be a memorial service. Donations will be welcomed in Sylvia's memory to the Southern Poverty Law Center, 400 Washington Avenue, Montgomery, Al 36104...or, The Gilda Radner Cancer Registry Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Elm & Carlton Streets, Buffalo, NY 14263.
