Richard W. Benz
Surrounded by his family, lifelong Marin County resident, Richard "Ranger" Benz, passed away in his home on Friday, the 22nd of November, 2002. He was 65. Born at Ross Hospital in 1937, Ranger lived for a brief time in San Rafael, before moving to Larkspur as a young boy. Living across the street from the Fire Chief, Ranger's father, Walter, was quickly recruited into the ranks of the volunteer fire department. This association lead Ranger to a career with the Larkspur Fire Department, from which he retired as a Captain in 1989. Following his retirement Ranger remained a member of the volunteer fire department, resulting in a combined service to the citizens of Larkspur of over 40 years. One of the many duties Ranger performed for the fire department, was the maintenance of the fire alarm boxes, which used to dot the city. This alarm system included the fire whistle, which can still be heard every day at noon and five. Many children in Larkspur, including Ranger's, knew it was time to head home for dinner when they heard the five o'clock whistle blow. Roger enjoyed gardening, relaxing in Hawaii, and he especially enjoyed the company of his grandchildren. Ranger is survived by his mother Phyllis, his wife Terrysue, his children Becky, Brenda, Ronald, Roger, and Amber, and his grandchildren Hilary, Melanie, David, Kimberly, Devin, Charlie, and Arianna. No services will be held, at Ranger's request. The family requests that memorial donations be made in his name to your favorite charity.
